The Ultimate Email Marketing Checklist

When a lot of people think about sending an email to their list, they think it’s a matter of writing it, proofing it, and then hitting the broadcast/send button. Then they go off to enjoy the rest of their day.

But here’s the problem…

If you just write off the cuff and send it almost immediately after, you’re just asking for problems. Your email may not even get opened if your subject line doesn’t nab attention. Maybe you’ll get a poor response if the email isn’t targeted. And if your links don’t even work, then you can definitely expect a poor response.

The solution? Use this four-step, 20-point checklist before you send out another email. Take a look…

Step 1: Define Your Goals

Don’t even think about writing one word until you define your goals for that particular email. Ask yourself the following five questions:

1. What is your primary goal?

In order to not dilute your efforts, be sure to pick just one primary goal on which to focus. For example:

Getting someone to click on a link.

Making a sale.

Getting someone to fill out a form.

Getting readers to call you.

Getting readers to request a freemium.

Getting readers to join your social networks.

Those are some of the most common goals, but you may have a different idea in mind. Pick your main goal and move on…

2. What is your secondary goal?

Now you might have a secondary goal as well, which you’ll want to keep in mind as you create your email.

For example, your main goal might be to get your readers to watch a video, but your secondary goal may be to get them to share the video with their friends.

3. What kind of content will best help you achieve your goals?

Now that you know your goals, you need to figure out what type of content will help you meet those goals. For example:

A product review.

A product comparison.

A how-to article.

A tips article.

A list article.

A video.

An audio.

And so on.

4. Will you send a single email or a series?

Tip: An email series works better than a single email if you’re trying to get your readers to make a purchase. If you want them to take a smaller step, like share a piece of content, a single email may suffice.

5. How does your email help and benefit your reader?

We’ve been talking about your goals, but you need to be sure to focus on your reader’s goals. To that end, be sure that each email you send benefits the reader in some way. (E.G., it shouldn’t just be about lining your pockets – it should be about helping your readers.)

Step 2: Craft Your Content

Crafting the content includes creating an attention-getting subject line, as well as content that keeps your readers engaged and reading to the very end of your email. To that end, check these points…

6. Do you have a compelling subject line?

Ask yourself these questions:

Did you brainstorm at least a dozen or more possible subject lines?

Does your subject line include a benefit?

Optionally, does your subject line arouse curiosity?

Is your subject line targeted to your audience?

7. Do you keep readers engaged with a great opener?

Here are different ways to open your email:

Telling a story.

Sharing a shocking fact or statistic.

Talking directly about the reader’s problems.

Talking about the solutions to those problems.

Asking the reader an engaging question.

8. Do you engage readers emotionally?

TIP: If you don’t evoke emotion, then it will be harder to get the reader to take action later. Sharing a story is one good way to evoke emotion.

9. Do you share benefits?

Your reader is always asking “What’s in it for me?” as they read your content. Be sure you share the benefits.

10. Do you offer a strong call to action?

You’ll increase your conversion rate if you tell your readers exactly what to do next. E.G.,

Step 3: Segment and Track

The next major step is to make sure that your emails are meeting your goals. To that end, check the following points…

11. Check that your email service provider (ESP) includes analytics.

Most major ESPs such as Aweber and GetResponse include analytics.

12. Segment your list if applicable and/or possible.

The idea here is to segment your list by interests and behaviors, and then send targeted emails to these list segments.

For example, create segments for each lead magnet and product you create. This segments your list by interest in a particular topic or product.

13. Check that your email is targeted to the audience/segment.

Ask yourself:

Is my email written in a way to appeal to this specific audience?

Do I talk directly to their pains?

Do I write in a way that this audience will connect with and understand?

14. Code your links for tracking.

Some ESPs provide built-in tools for link tracking. If your ESP doesn’t provide this, then be sure to use a unique link for each email campaign.

15. Compare the metrics to your goals.

Once you’ve sent out your emails and are getting responses, then compare this data to your goals. If they’re falling short, tweak the email to improve responses.

Step 4: Final Touches

Now before you hit send, be sure to take action on these points…

16. Polish the content.

Specifically:

Delete anything unnecessary. In other words, don’t insert “fluff” into your emails.

Read it out loud to check that it flows smoothly.

Add in tips, examples and even illustrations to add value to the content.

17. Proof the content.

You do this yourself, though another person will be better at spotting your errors.

18. Check the links.

Click on all links to be sure they work as intended and go to the correct page.

19. Check the spam score.

Most major ESPs let you run your emails through a spam tester to see what sort of spam “score” they get. High scores make it more likely your email will end up in the bulk/spam folder rather than in the inbox. If you get a high score, rewrite it to lower the score.

20. Send yourself a test message.

This lets you see how the email looks in your email client. If you’re sending HTML emails, check it on multiple devices (including your phone) to be sure the email is responsive and looks good across devices.

8 Ways to Find Killer Ideas for Your Next eCourse

Here’s the number one question I hear—not only from new product creators, but even from seasoned business owners: “How do I find a good idea?”

What they really mean, of course, is “How do I find an idea that will sell?” No one wants to spend days or weeks or more planning, developing and launching a course only to hear crickets on the big day. You want to know you’ll have at least some measure of success.

But don’t overthink it. The answer is simple. Just give your audience what they are asking for.

  1. Check out the competition. What are they creating? If you serve a similar audience, then what sells for them will very likely sell for you. Now, before you break out the “But it’s already been done!” line, keep this in mind: No two coaches are alike. You may create a similar course, but your voice, your experience, your teaching style, and your personality are all very different. No one else is you, and for some customers, YOU are the only one who will resonate with them.

  2. Join all the Facebook groups frequented by your ideal client. In there you will find a goldmine of info about their struggle, what challenge they face, what tools they ask about, technical problems, etc. So many time I got info-product ideas just going through those Facebook groups. 
  3. Pay attention to your tribe. What questions do they ask in your blog, in your Facebook group, in your help desk, and elsewhere? What posts are they reading on your blog (check your Google Analytic stats)? These are all valuable sources of intel about exactly what they need and want from you. 
  4. Ask. Still not sure what your dream client is looking for? Ask. Create a survey and ask your dream client to tell you what he struggle with, what keeps him from realizing his success, and even what he’s tried before in an effort to solve his issues. 
  5. Check the bestsellers list. Which books in your niche are outperforming others? These are the ones that offer answers your clients are seeking. Flip through the table of contents and read the online reviews to dig deep into the topics that really resonate with your audience. 
  6. Read the FAQs. Check the frequently asked questions section on competitor blogs and in forums and Facebook groups. Also check blogs for “Start Here,” and “Quickstart” pages. Many times the most common questions and concerns are addressed here.  
  7. Review the available resources. Which are the most common resources your colleagues and competitors are recommending? There are often questions surrounding the use of software and other tools, and these can be great ideas for eCourses. 
  8. Check your email. If you’ve been in business for more than a few months, chances are you receive questions from friends, clients and even strangers on a daily basis. What are they asking about? Look for common themes and trends.

None of this JUNK is working for you?… and what WORKED for me

“None of this junk is working for me…”

I hear that complaint a lot from newbies AND so-called veterans
who still can’t make money online.

They get bitter because they think it’s all about selling junky products
to total strangers and they think the only people who can “make it” are
creeps and cons.

Honestly I used to think the same!…

But something happened that changed my mind…

After 7 months of buying one info product after another and taking
no action, it hit me that most successful marketers are following the
same simple formula: they promote products to their LIST.

That was 3 years ago. So I set myself a goal of building a 10,000
subscribers list, and promote both affiliate products (only those that
I use) and my own products.

To keep it simple and easy to remember, I put on paper four essential
keywords that would define my success plan and copied it on several
post-it notes and put those notes all over the house, including the door
of my fridge.

Here are those keywords:

1) FOCUS

2) BELIEVE

3) LISTBUILDING

4) CONTENT

Look, I don’t want to sound superficial, but really, those words were the
building block of my online success!

FOCUS in an obsessive way on my LISTBUILDING objective and
forget about any new offer that hits my mailbox. BELIEVE in the huge
potential that internet marketing offers and that money will come if I deliver
quality CONTENT, free or paid (I mostly gave free reports back then…).

Write down your goals. Keep it simple. Find the few powerful keywords
that would define your success plan and copy them on several post-it notes,
and put those notes all over your house, office, garage, etc…

Keep the focus, and you will see how things begin to work for you.

Where Should I Start From?

I always encourage my newsletter subscribers to ask me any
question that crosses their mind – related to Internet Marketing,
and one of the most asked question sounds like that:

“Where do I START? How to make money online when I’m just beginning?”

A lot of people are facing this issue. The major complaint is that
you are exposed on a daily base to so many choices, business
models, magic solutions, etc, that you kind of “shut down”,
buying one product after another but never going through them,
or just ignoring them, sitting on the fence, waiting for something
more convincing. Here is the most eloquent message that kind of
express this frustration:

“I can’t seem to get through all of the BS to focus on what to do!”

Do you relate to the above message?…

I wish I could tell you that I was so smart and that I understood
what to do from day one…

But the truth is that for almost 8 months I was buying one product
after another, some for $27 and other outrageously expensive, but
NEVER took action.

It was incredible, a kind of addiction, looking for the next shiny object…

Until one day, when I get a phone call from my banker notifying
me that I am minus $15,000 on my credit card “just from internet
transactions”!

That was a wake up call for me!

I said to myself: “Wait a minute! I was supposed to make money
here, not just spend it!”

I mean, I really do believe in investing in self education, and I am
always looking to learn more stuff, but this was getting “sick”…

I felt I had two options at this stage: Crack the code or quit trying
to make money online…

I took a few days off and spent some time with my family. Taking
a few days off included “off the screen of any computer”.

Have a break from your computer screen! You should try it :)

That’s when suddenly it all came clear for me… I realized that
absolutely all the online marketers delivered their messages through
email, and not through some super ninja technique… You may say,
“DUH!!!”… But really, this simple truth made THE difference.

Three weeks later I did my first sale online…

So, where to start from? Start by building your LIST.

Once you identify what target niche you want to address, you should
invest time, sweat and money on building your list of prospects and
potential customers.

Anything you do online at this first stage should have the LIST as
your number ONE priority.
